Pulse Class
Monday and Thursday Evenings 6PM - 8PM Tuesday and Friday Mornings 6AM - 7AM
An uptempo circuit class aimed at those seeking to kickstart your day with some heart-pumping exercise.
Our Pulse classes utilise Tabata Training Principles to deliver you a fun and efficient workout. The Tabata Protocol was established by Dr. Izumi Tabata at the National Institute of Fitness and Sports in Tokyo, Japan. His research showed that over a 6-week period high-intensity interval training over 4-minute periods had a greater effect on both aerobic and anaerobic fitness than moderate aerobic exercise done for 45 minutes. In more detail, the moderate intensity group training program produced a significant increase in VO2 max (an indicator of aerobic fitness) of about 10%, but had no effect on anaerobic capacity. The high intensity group (using Tabata Intervals) improved their VO2 max by about 14% while anaerobic capacity improved by 28%.
The theory sounds simple - 20 seconds workout before 10 seconds of rest. The application is somewhat more difficult as you combine 8 of these intervals for each station. As with all of our classes, we like to focus firstly on form, utilising our stabilising muscles to ensure good posture. A timer keeps track of the intervals, meaning all you need to focus on is your form throughout the exercise.
Our classes are designed for flexibility, with the gym supervised by a physiotherapist on Monday and Thursday evenings between 6pm and 8pm, and Tuesday and Friday mornings from 6am to 7am. Since the program is designed on 5-minute periods (including a minute's rest between stations) rolling one after the other, you are able to come on in when you can make it during that time slot.
Need to get to work or get the kids ready for school? No problem, come on in early!
Like to sleep in a little, No problem, come on in later!
Generally we advise a program of 6 stations, bringing about a total workout time of 30 minutes. However those starting off might like to build themselves up, starting at 2 or 3 stations only and gradually increasing from week to week. This might be shorter than what you currently do, or perceive you should be doing. However, the focus of this program is to exercise smarter and more efficiently. Trust us, you'll know you've had a workout!
